Background of the Study

Election result transmission technology (ERTT) has been increasingly adopted globally to enhance the credibility of electoral processes. In Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) introduced electronic transmission of results to mitigate electoral fraud, ensure transparency, and reduce human interference in collation and tabulation (Ogunyemi & Bala, 2023). However, concerns persist regarding its effectiveness, particularly in rural areas such as Donga Local Government Area, Taraba State, where technological infrastructure and internet connectivity are limited (Adebayo, 2024).

Donga LGA has experienced election-related controversies, including allegations of vote manipulation and result tampering. The introduction of result transmission technology aims to address these challenges, but its impact remains underexplored. This study evaluates the effectiveness of ERTT in reducing electoral fraud and ensuring credibility in Donga LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to integrate digital solutions in elections, electoral fraud remains a concern in Nigeria. Manual result collation has historically been a source of manipulation, but whether the use of electronic transmission has significantly curbed these practices in Donga LGA is yet to be fully assessed. This study investigates the role of result transmission technology in promoting election transparency.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of election result transmission technology in preventing electoral fraud in Donga LGA.

  2. To examine challenges associated with implementing ERTT in rural areas.

  3. To evaluate voter perceptions of electronic result transmission in ensuring election credibility.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective is result transmission technology in reducing electoral fraud in Donga LGA?

  2. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of ERTT?

  3. What are voters’ perceptions of electronic result transmission in elections?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Election result transmission technology reduces electoral fraud in Donga LGA.

  2. Implementation challenges hinder the full effectiveness of ERTT in rural areas.

  3. Voters in Donga LGA perceive electronic transmission as a tool for election credibility.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will help policymakers and electoral bodies enhance the adoption of technology in elections. It will also contribute to discussions on how to strengthen electoral integrity in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Donga LGA, with a focus on INEC’s electronic result transmission. Challenges include data availability and respondents’ familiarity with the technology.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Election Result Transmission Technology (ERTT): A digital system for electronically transmitting election results.

  • Electoral Fraud: Illegal practices aimed at influencing election outcomes.

  • Election Credibility: The degree to which elections are free, fair, and transparent.
